The History of The Co-op Funeral Home of People's Memorial

In 2007, Service Corporation International (SCI) canceled the contracts People's Memorial had with its Seattle area funeral homes.

The members of People's Memorial Association voted at their annual meeting on April 12, 2007 to open their own funeral home in Seattle. This new funeral home would be owned by the members of People's Memorial Association as a co-op.

In just seven weeks, The Co-op Funeral Home of People's Memorial was incorporated and licensed as a funeral home. We leased office space, purchased furniture and equipment as well as hired and trained staff.

We opened our doors June 11, 2007 on Seattle’s Capitol Hill.

In 2014, we updated our name to avoid the confusion people had between the People's Memorial Association and its member-owned funeral home.

In March of 2020 we outgrew our Capitol Hill office and moved into a larger office in Seattle's Queen Anne neighborhood.

From the beginning, The Co-op Funeral Home of People's Memorial has had a reputation for providing simple, economical funeral arrangements and quality customer service.

We are one of the only cooperative funeral homes in the U.S.

We now handle the funeral arrangements for approximately 1 in 12 King County deaths.
