Mark Allen Schoen

Mark Schoen of Seattle, WA. was born in Minneapolis, MN. on 10/21/1959, the son of Gerald and Margaret Schoen. He passed away at age 64 on 07/11/2024.

Mark is survived by his loving wife Dawn Porter of Seattle, WA., his sister Linda Morrison of Charlotte, NC., her husband Keith Morrison, and nephew Cameron Morrison. He is also survived by members of his ‘in-law’ family including 2 sisters-in-law, 2 brothers-in-law and 4 beloved nieces and nephews.

Mark graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. with a B.A. degree in journalism. He continued his education earning a Masters of Professional Accounting from the University of Washington. Mark worked as an accountant at The University of Washington and then moved to Seattle University where he found co-workers dedicated to educating students for a just and humane world.

Mark was above all a devoted husband and brother. He was a devout Catholic and an active member of St. James Cathedral. He enjoyed travelling with his wife. His latest adventure found them traveling by train through Australia. Mark loved all things baseball. As an armchair historian, his deep love and understanding of the game and its evolution impressed all who were privy to his stories. He was a Renaissance man which was evidenced by his appreciation of the arts: museums, symphony concerts and theatre. He was a voracious reader of diverse genres, which included poetry. Mark’s passion for photography found its way onto the cover of the book “Journey To The Sun” by Gregory Orfalea. Mark was a quiet, measured, kind and generous man. Mark had a strong work ethic and strove to earn the respect of his colleagues.

A funeral mass will be held at St. James Cathedral, 804 Ninth Ave., Seattle WA., on Monday, July 22, 2024 at 12:10 pm., reception immediately following.

In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to St James Cathedral or the Society of St Vincent de Paul (c/o St James Cathedral).

Mark was a gentleman and an erudite fellow who quietly served his fellow parishioners at St. James over many years. It was a privilege to know him. My thoughts and prayers for his wife and the extended family he leaves behind.

So sorry about Mark passing away. I knew Mark when we were kids and adolescents, mostly through our Boy Scout Troop while his Dad was Scoutmaster. I appreciate Mark being such a great friend to me during that time. Mark was also two years ahead of me at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic School, Bishop McGuinness Memorial High School, and UNC-Chapel Hill. Linda and I were classmates at IHM and BMMHS. May Our Risen Lord Savior Jesus Christ always be with Mark, his family, and his friends, especially during this time of mourning.

Mark was such a kind and professional person. I have a deep appreciate for the love he had for his work and the impact it had on our students. May his memory be a blessing to all who knew and loved him.

I met Mark when he joined the Controller's Office 16 years ago. He was a valuable addition to one of the most diverse offices on campus, representing the world with members from every continent. It was true then, and it remains true today.

For all these 16 years, Mark consistently demonstrated a reliable and stable character. He had a high level of integrity and was always very helpful. I remember when Mark suffered a health issue a couple of years ago; he attributed his life-saving to his wife, Dawn. Without Dawn, Mark would not have been with us then.

Mark played a major role when the university transitioned to the new ERP system. We were beyond words when we heard of his passing. Isaiah says, "Good people pass away; the godly often die before their time. But no one seems to care or wonder why. No one seems to understand that God is protecting them from the evil to come" (Isaiah 57:2).

Thank you, Dawn, for allowing Mark to be part of the Controller's Office and for his many contributions to the university. Mark is in a better place now, where there is no more pain, sorrow, or crying (Revelation 21:4). Mark has fought the good fight, finished the race, and kept the faith (2 Timothy 4:7).

May the love of our Lord give you strength in this time of grief.

Whenever I worked with Mark, his calm and composed nature stood out. He approached every situation with a level-headed professionalism and an unwavering focus on finding the best solution. His quiet optimism was a reassuring presence to those around him. He will be remembered for his discerning wisdom and kindness and he will be missed.
