Elizabeth G. (Betty) Selman

December 9, 1920 – August 27, 2022

Betty Selman was born in the town of Remer, Minnesota, on December 9, 1920, to William Henry Greene and Annabel Hermes Greene. Betty graduated at the top of her high school class and went on to college before taking a job as Office Manager at Prudential Life Insurance in Minneapolis.

In 1949, Betty came out west to visit a friend and was introduced Fred Selman. After a brief courtship, they married and settled on Mercer Island. They had three children in the early 1950s, Susan, Julie, and Scott. Beginning in the 1960s Fred and Betty split their time between Mercer Island and a much loved cabin on Whidbey Island.

After briefly living in Idaho in the early 1970’s, Fred and Betty returned to a new home in Bellevue in 1974. When Fred died in 1982, Betty kept busy, volunteering at Children’s Hospital Thrift Shop for more than 20 years, traveling with friends, hosting memorable holiday gatherings, and babysitting grandchildren.

In 2013, at the age of 92, Betty settled at Island House on Mercer Island, and at 101, she moved to Norse Home in Seattle, where she was living at the time of her death.

In addition to Fred, Betty was predeceased by her son, Scott Selman, who died in 1986. She is survived by daughters Sue Selman and Julie Selman; grandchildren Nathan Peoples, Simon Yuzer, Zachary and Holly Yuzer; great-grandchildren Henry and Thomas Yuzer; and “adopted” daughter Kim Keyes.
