Maryann H. Mason

Maryann’s wish was not to be a burden in her old age and she greatly succeeded by being a joy to all.  Maryann came from the small town of Polo, Illinois having been born eighty-six years ago and never lost her Midwestern sense of humor and witty Irish tongue.  Always a lady, she wouldn’t leave the house without impeccable clothes and presentable hair which was still the case after passing peacefully at home.  Mrs. Mason was a lifelong English teacher who taught over forty-six years including thirty in Seattle.  We estimate she educated well over five-thousand students and she repeatedly said that no matter what education trend came along or how times changed, “kids were kids.”  Even after leaving the classroom she returned to volunteer by reading to children.  After retiring she worked in her cherished garden in Bryn Mawr (Renton) before moving to Shoreline to be with her beloved grandchildren Oliver and Tessia.  Maryann is survived by her son, Tim, daughter-in-law Christine, grandchildren, and brothers Dick, Jim and John Hackett.  She was preceded in death by her husband Ed Mason.  There will be no formal funeral at her request but a celebration of her life will be held and it will definitely include a glass of her Chardonnay with ice.  To honor Maryann, please give a book to a child to provide the lifelong gift of reading.

Maryann was my teacher 50 years ago at Polo Junior High School. I have had none better. Maryann helped me love learning in general and the English language in particular. She made diagramming sentences interesting and words of the day opened the mind. I treasure her memory and pray for the happy repose of her soul.
