Vera Allen

d. October 7, 2017

Vera Allen was born on February 19, 1926 in Chicago, IL to Ernest and Henrine Cain.

Vera’s mother passed away when she was only 9 months old. She was raised by her maternal grandparents. Vera accepted Christ at a young age. She attended Faith Temple Church of God In Christ in Chicago, IL.

Vera met Julius Allen, the love of her life upon graduating from Wendell Phillips High School. After a whirlwind romance, the couple married and spent many years together prior to his death. They had four wonderful children – 3 boys and 1 girl.

Vera loved to sing! She was a great vocalist. As a young girl, her voice stood out in the church choir. The neighborhood night club owners often wanted Vera to sing in their clubs on the weekends. Vera’s grandmother did not want her to go into show business. She wanted Vera to be a gospel singer. Vera obeyed her grandmother and joined a gospel singing group that was very popular in Chicago. They performed in many of the local churches.

Vera enjoyed all genres of music. Her all-time favorite singer was “Smokey Robison.” She loved hearing him sing “More Love” which became her life’s motto.

Vera was never one to let grass grow under her feet! She lived in Chicago, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Tulsa, Houston and Seattle.

Vera had a very successful career before retiring. She held positions at Continental Bank in Chicago and The Chicago Public Library.

Vera was a member of a travel club and spent most of her free time doing what she loved best....meeting people and travelling around the world with family and friends.

Vera had an entertaining sense of humor, contagious smile and the unique ability to have frequent conversations with total strangers. Vera always maintained a larger than life personality that won the trust and hearts of many.

Vera’s love of music, travel, and unwavering faith in God left a lasting impression on every one who crossed her path.

Vera peacefully departed this life on October 7, 2017 at Wesley Homes Health Center in Des Moines, WA.

Vera was preceded in death by her husband Julius Allen Sr. and two of her sons Julius Allen and Stefan Allen.

Vera leaves to cherish her memory, daughter Elizabeth Allen Shields (Seattle), son Reginald Allen (Milwaukee), step-daughter, Lois Booker (Chicago), 23 grandchildren, and a host of great-grandchildren, family and friends.
