Sigrid Asmus

July 11, 1937 — October 22, 2024

Seattle

Sigrid Asmus was born July 11, 1937 in Ann Arbor, MI. She died October 22, 2024 in Seattle WA. Most of her first 12 years were spent in Ohio, then in 1949 the family moved to Boulder, CO. Sigrid completed high school there, attended one year at Antioch university in Ohio, then completed her BFA at the University of Colorado Boulder, CO. She enjoyed bicycling into the nearby countryside to sketch landscapes. In the early 1960’s, she moved to New York City, where she worked for a number of years for ARTS magazine, enjoyed the New York art scene and the cities’ ethnic neighborhoods. She earned a Masters degree in Library Science at Columbia University, NYC during this time. She continued to sketch, and then became fascinated by embroidery in the European folk tradition, creating a number of beautiful items. In the early 1970’s, she moved to Seattle, where she became an avid gardener, especially interested in Iris hybridizing. Much of her last 50 years were spent as a freelance editor, primarily of books dealing with art and psychoanalytic work.

She is survived by her brothers, Ernest Asmus of Farmington, NM, Forrest Asmus of Sheridan WY, Grant Asmus of Longmont, CO, and a sister, Ingrid Asmus, of Boulder, CO. A private family memorial service will be held in the future. Donations may be made in her name to environmental organizations.
