Robert Smith

d. February 3, 2024

It is with somber hearts the family of Robert "Bob" Smith announces his passing on February 3, 2024, in Seattle, WA, at the age of 92. Bob leaves behind a legacy characterized by integrity, kindness, and meticulous design.

Bob was the devoted husband to Akemi Yuasa Smith for 66 years, a loving relationship that served as the foundation upon which they built a warm home. His love and guidance as a father to Troy, Cameron, and Jennifer; his support as a father-in-law to Ken Carter; and his loving presence as a grandfather to Elena and Nicole, have left indelible marks on the lives he touched.

Bob was an alumnus of the University of Washington, where he earned his degree in Architecture. His time in the ROTC Army, stationed in South Korea, displayed his commitment to service and country, further shaping the tenor of his character. His professional life was spent as an architect, beginning his career with John Graham Co. and Sherlock Smith and Adam, specializing in hospital design. Bob's vision and dedication were also evident when he moved on to private practice where he focused on residential and small-business design, touching the daily lives of many.

A man of many talents, Bob was artistic, often sketching helpful drawings for those around him. He would frequently reach into his pocket for his favorite pen and sketch pictures of houses, gardens, directions, and even the seating arrangements for dinner to help with explanations, conversations, or memory recall. He was detail-oriented, thoughtful, kind, generous with his time, considerate to all, and conscientious.

Bob's passions extended beyond his professional life, from the tranquility of his garden to the storied landscapes of Europe, from the quiet joy of bicycle rides to the strategic game of Mahjong. Each hobby was a reflection of his love for life and an expression of his diverse interests.

A service to honor Bob's memory will take place on March 3, 2024, at 11 am, at Lakeview Cemetery located at 1554 15th Ave E, Seattle, WA 98112. Friends, family, and those whose lives were touched by Bob are welcome to join in remembrance of a life that exemplified grace and purpose.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be directed to the Alzheimer's Association at www.alz.org .

Bob's passing leaves an irreplaceable void in the lives of those who knew him. All who had the pleasure of knowing this exceptional man will hold his wisdom, warmth, and the gentle strength of his character in the highest regard.
