John Scott Jardine of Port Townsend, WA, 82, passed away from cancer on January 24, 2025, in Seattle, WA. He was born on March 6, 1942, in Seattle and lived all his life in the Seattle area. John’s playground was the zoo and Greenlake area. He graduated from Lincoln High School in 1960.
John was preceded in death by his parents John and Mary Ann (Wilson) who passed away in a car accident in 1968, grandparents, and many aunts and uncles.
John is survived by his wife of almost 40 years Carol Jardine (Stoddart, Hunter), daughter Diane Jardine, son Larry Hunter (Tonette), grandsons Scott Newsom (Talia), Conner Donovan, Logan Hunter, granddaughters Sarah Taylor (Lukas), Kaelyn Gillock and 5 great-grandchildren (Jane, Taissa, Shiloh, Maija and Leif), sister Marianne Knight and cousin Jim Pfifer.
John’s grandparents and father arrived in the United States from Scotland in 1920. John was immensely proud of his Scottish heritage and had a remarkably close relationship with his grandmother Georgette Jardine. He told many stories about their afternoon tea times.
During high school, John worked in the kitchen and delivered room service at the Meany Hotel in the UW district. After high school, he attended college with the goal of becoming a pharmacist. He also began working at the US Postal Service in November of 1961. Life had a different plan for him and after 36 years John retired in 1997 from the USPS. He had a highly successful career starting as a part-time flexible clerk to his final position as the Plant Manager of the Air Mail Center. One of the highlights of his career was extensive involvement in the 1975 activation of the new Bulk Mail Center in Federal Way. Unbeknownst to him at the time, it was also where he met his future wife, Carol. However, fate didn’t bring them together until 1984.
John and Carol married on April 14, 1985. They honeymooned in French Polynesia. Through the years, they vacationed in the South Pacific, Australia, New Zealand, Caribbean and many trips to Hawaii. After John retired, they bought the “Affinity”, an aft-cabin trawler. For 14 years, they cruised the Puget Sound, Hood Canal, San Juan Islands, Gulf Islands, Broughton Islands, Desolation Sound and around Vancouver Island. Carol joined John in retirement when she retired from the USPS in 2004. In 2012, they gave up the Affinity and bought a mobile home in Port Hardy on the north tip of Vancouver Island. Until 2020, they spend the summers in Port Hardy fishing on their 21’ Arima. After 34 years on Alki in Seattle, they sold their home and moved to Port Townsend, WA.
His daughter, Diane, has fond memories of time spent with her dad including boating in the San Juans and celebrating John’s 40th birthday in Hawaii. She fondly remembers him quite often singing Roger Miller’s “King of the Road” to her.
John had a full and happy life filled with family and friends. He loved spending time with the grandkids watching them grow into adults. He enjoyed waterskiing, back-packing, traveling, golfing, boating, fishing, crabbing, shrimping, gathering oysters and clam digging.
He will be missed by all who knew him.
