Glenny Law (Glendora Louise Whitmire Green Law), age 94, died peacefully at home on January 10 in the company of her three children. Glenny was born on July 12,1930 in Woodland, CA, to Frank Whitmire and Gertrude (Carpenter) Whitmire.
Although born in Woodland, CA, Glenny spent most of her childhood in Petaluma, CA. She graduated from Petaluma High School and, in 1948, was crowned the first Egg Bowl Queen—we still have the unique tiara she wore to prove it. She attended San Jose State College (now University) and graduated in 1952 with a bachelor’s degree in education. Glenny taught elementary school for 34 years in San Jose, CA, Fort Lewis, WA, and Issaquah, WA. She retired from Maple Hills Elementary in 1997 and subbed for a few years thereafter. She never tired of teaching and often shared how much she loved her work and her students, feeling lucky each day to do something she enjoyed. She lived in the Bellevue, WA home she built with her first husband, for nearly 50 years.
Glenny was introduced to Barbershop harmony as a college student. She was a member of Sweet Adelines for 70+ years and was the last surviving founding member of the Lakeside Chapter in Bellevue, WA. Over the decades she sang in quartets and choruses, competing and winning many first place medals at worldwide competitions.
Singing was her favorite hobby, but she also enjoyed travelling. She visited most of the United States, including many trips to Hawaii. She also traveled to Australia, throughout Europe, and enjoyed cruises in the Caribbean.
Glenny was a member of Overlake Services League (OSL) and volunteered in OSL’s thrift shop in Bellevue Square for several years. Her children remember well the excited calls about the great deals to be had! She was also a member of Seattle First Baptist Church and proud mother-in-law to its Lead Pastor (now retired). Her greatest accomplishment by far was raising her children. She loved being a mom and her main wish was that her children be happy in life. We can confirm that her wish came true. Glenny will be greatly missed, and we are grateful for the years of unconditional love, kindness, and support she gave to each of us.
Glenny is survived by her children Patrick Green (Tim Phillips) of Burien, WA, Wendy Green of Snoqualmie, WA, and Julie Lombardo (Tom) of Seattle, WA; grandsons Eric Lombardo of Seattle, WA and Alex Lombardo (Alice) of St Andrews, Scotland; her sister Donna Meer (Johnney) of Novato, CA; niece Carol Meer of San Rafael, CA and grand-niece Reina Reis of San Francisco, CA. Both of her husbands predeceased her (Raymond Law, Delmar Green) as did her grand-nephew Ely Reis.
A Celebration of Life will take place on Saturday, January 25, 2pm, at Seattle First Baptist Church (1111 Harvard Ave, Seattle, WA 98122). In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Fred Lind Residents Fund, 1802 17 Avenue, Seattle, WA 98122. The fund gives a yearly monetary gift to the hard-working staff at Fred Lind Manor, where our mother received such amazing care and support.
