Doris Lorene Pelfrey Eaker died on October 13, 2024, just shy of her 92nd birthday in Lynnwood, WA following a brief illness.
Doris was born on November 11, 1932 to Herbert and Eva Pelfrey in Olive Hill, Kentucky. She was the 12th child in the family. Her mother died six months after she was born and her father died when she was two. Doris lived with a variety of relatives and at a boarding school while growing up. She attended Central College in McPherson Kansas. After graduating from there with an AA degree, she transferred to Seattle Pacific College for her junior and senior years. Doris married Robert Brooks Eaker following graduation from SPU. Doris’s first job after graduating was as a high school Home Economics teacher on Whidbey Island.
Doris taught in a variety of locations until son Robert Curtis Eaker was born. Six years later, Mark Carson Eaker was born. Doris was a stay-at-home mother for many years. When Mark was 4 he was diagnosed with juvenile diabetes. After 21 years of marriage, Doris became a single parent following a divorce.
Doris worked for Aglow International, a Christian organization for 20 years in a variety positions with increasing responsibilities, including planning some international conferences. Subsequently she worked as secretary for St. Alban’s Episcopal Church for 14 years. Her final employment was working in companion care for the elderly.
Doris is survived by sons Curtis and Mark and grandson Gabriel.
Doris will be remembered as a loving mother and a woman of strong faith. Her sons and grandson meant the world to her. She frequently quoted Numbers 6:24-26: “The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make his face to shine upon you, and be gracious to you; the Lord lift up his countenance upon you, and give you peace.”
A memorial service will be held on November 16, 2024 at 1:30 pm at Calvin Presbyterian Church in the Fireside Room, 18826 3rd Ave NW in Shoreline. Memorials can be made to Calvin Presbyterian Church in Shoreline, WA designated for the Deacon’s Fund.
