We are so sorry to tell you of the passing of our sister Calliope Sol, who lost her battle with ovarian cancer on Friday, Dec.4th.
Calliope was born in Kennewick, WA, on April 9th, 1963, the third of three sisters. Apart from the usual ballet and tap lessons, she also showed strong early talent as a musician, and studied classical violin and voice. On graduating from high school, she moved to Seattle to study composition at the University of Washington. After attaining a bachelor’s degree, she moved to Chicago seeking employment in the commercial music industry. While freelancing for several years, she garnered a variety of industry honors, such as a Chicago/Midwest Regional Emmy Nomination and Communicator Awards. She also supplemented her audio freelance work by teaching audio techniques part-time at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and Experimental Sound Studio. Her many projects included music production for a music video (eLectricity) which was shown on the Sci Fi network. For several years she worked at Shure Incorporated as a technical writer, also pursuing an advanced degree in computer graphical user interface.
She loved good food, animals, music and dance. She was highly creative, and was a skilled seamstress and maker of everything you could imagine. She built a network of friends and admirers that stood her in good stead as she faced some long-term health issues during the last several years.
Her family welcomed her back to Seattle recently, unfortunately only to lose her all too soon. We mourn her deeply, but also celebrate her unique gifts and her legacy of creativity and love. She is survived by her sisters Ann and Sara Shoemaker.

A celebration of Calliope’s life will be held on Saturday, January 9th at 11 am at the Shelterhouse at Cal Anderson Park, 1635 11th Ave, Seattle, with lunch to follow. If anyone has photos, stories or memories you wish to contribute but you are unable to attend, we encourage you to send them to us via email. We would be pleased and honored to share them for you during the service.
