Beloved son, brother and friend, Ryan Dane Kozie passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, March 30, 2014. Born November 12, 1979 in Seattle, Ryan attended Auburn Riverside High School, and the University of Washington, graduating with honors. In 2012, he received his Master of Library and Information Science from the University of Washington. Having set his sights on the Deschutes Public Library System in Bend, OR, he was thrilled to be hired as a librarian at the main branch. Ryan loved being a librarian. He lead book clubs, helped patrons in the computer lab, recommended books and assisted with research at the reference desk. The library provided the perfect opportunity for Ryan to put his passion for literature and learning to use helping people. What he wanted most in life was to make a difference in the world. An avid traveler and adventurer as a young man, he loved European travel, with family, friends and even alone. He explored Mexico, the Caribbean and Costa Rica, enthralled by every place he visited. Aside from travel, Ryan’s many interests included skiing, hiking with his dog, mountain biking, outdoor photography, reading the world’s great literature, music, spending time with friends and family, water sports, and long philosophical conversations.

Ryan is survived by his loving family, Daniel W. Kozie and Emily (Witt) Kozie of Seattle, younger brother Adam Kozie also of Seattle, his grandmother Jean (Gleason) Witt of Des Moines, WA, and many loving aunts, uncles and cousins. Ryan’s gentle manner and quick wit will be missed by everyone. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. Memorials may be sent to The Deschutes Public Library Foundation, at dplfoundation.org/waystogive/
