Kathryn Louise Miller Bowden
Kathryn Louise Miller Bowden, age 100, died in Seattle on October 4, 2009. She was born in Spokane on September 5, 1909, the daughter of Elsie Madeleine Rosenzweig and Frederick Edgar Miller. She graduated from Lewis and Clark High School and attended Washington State College where she ws a summa cum laude graduate in home economics. She worked for the Department of Agriculture as a home economics extension agent in Whitman County. She also received a master’s degree in child nutrition from Mills College in Oakland, CA. She married Richard William Bowden of Everett in 1940, and they began a life together in the US Army during World War II.
After her husband’s retirement from the Army, they moved to Seattle in 1965. Mrs. Bowden was a docent at the Seattle Art Museum and the Seattle Asian Art Museum. She was formerly a member of the Episcopal Church of the Ascension in Magnolia where she served on the altar guild. More recently, she moved to Exeter House and joined Trinity Episcopal Church in downtown Seattle.
She was predeceased by her husband and her daughter Helen Bowden-White. Surviving are three daughters, Kathryn Bowden Groth, of Frederick, Maryland; Frances Ward Bowden Affandy of Bandung, Indonesia; and Elizabeth Bowden-Smith of Palo Alto, California. She is also Survived by six grand children: Kathryn Mathe, of Budapest, Hungary; Elisabeth Groth Brodell, of Williamsport, Maryland; Edward Tipton Groth of Mountaintop, Pennsylvania; Mohamad Gabriel Affandy of College Park, Maryland; Michael David Affandy of Bandung, Indonesia; and Roland R. Smith of Mountain View, California. Also surviving are six great grandchildren. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, October 10, 2009, at 11:00 a.m. at Trinity Episcopal Church, at the corner of 8th and James Streets. Inurnment will take place at a later date at Arlington National Cemetery Columbarium.
