Longtime West Seattle resident Grace Anna Nelson passed away peacefully on April 18, 2012 at age 96. Grace was the widow of Donald C. Nelson. She is also pre-deceased by parents Oscar E. Hertz and Elna C. Svensdotter and her sisters Evelyn Chafin and Elsie Watson. Survivors include her son Steven Nelson (Migs), daughter Janet Nelson, grandchildren Bryan Harris (Danny), Carlin Herrera (Shawn), Elna Nelson and several nieces and nephews.
Grace attended Jefferson Grade School, James Madison Jr. High and graduated from West Seattle High School in 1934. After she and Don were married they made their home in West Seattle. Grace’s many interests included gathering with family and friends, gardening, golf, church activities, reading and travel. She also enjoyed Seattle Mariner baseball. Whether winning or losing, she was a faithful fan of the Mariners. Grace and Don spent happy retirement years on Anderson Island and Kauai, HI. She was a member of Admiral UCC, Seattle Milk Fund and Eastern Star. Her “Sewing Club”—a group of women who met monthly for more than fiftyyears — included friends from as far back as grade school.
A celebration of Grace’s life will be held on Tuesday, May 8th, 1 p.m. at The Kenney (7125 Fauntleroy Way SW) in West Seattle. Memorials are suggested to Admiral Congregational United Church of Christ, Seattle Milk Fund or to The Kenney Foundation.
